Ask Charles: Summer Safety Tips

Being safe in the summer is about more than reapplying sunscreen and avoiding being outside during a big thunderstorm. You probably remember warning’s like those from your childhood but being safe in the summer also includes taking the right precautions when it comes your home. Here are a few other tips to help you stay safe when completing summer tasks around your home.

1) Stay cool at home

Summer can really bring on the heat. To protect yourself and your family from the dangers of overheating or heat exhaustion, make sure your air conditioning is properly insulated and operating efficiently. You should also leverage shades, blinds, and curtains on your windows to block out sunlight during the day to help keep your home cool - this will help with lowering your costs for running air conditioning all the time too! If you didn’t get your air conditioning unit a check up or maintenance in the spring, consider scheduling an appointment before the summer ends.

2) Grill carefully

Summertime and backyard barbeques go together like peanut butter and jelly. To protect yourself and your family when you fire up the grill, check your gas grill for hose leaks, blockages, and holes. If you are using a charcoal grill, make sure the coals are completely cooled down before you remove them from the grill for disposal. You should always make sure that children are playing far enough away from the grill that they won't accidentally bump into it and get burned on the outer edges.

3. Be careful with pesticides

When using pesticides in your yard, you definitely need to be mindful of the dangers that those chemicals can present. Don’t apply pesticides while children or pets are nearby as accidental ingestions can be dangerous. While using the pesticides, wear protective clothing such as long sleeves and eye protection, and thoroughly wash your hands afterward.
