Home Improvement Tips for Fall

02H16322

As August wraps up, the fall months are upon us - football, changing leaves, hot apple cider, and the crisp, cooler air. With the changing of the seasons, now is the time to prepare your home for the weather to come. Cooler temperatures and the mere fact that winter is coming, means you need your home to be operating efficiently to avoid any major instances. Check out some of these home improvement tips you can do to get ready for fall:

1) Clean out the gutters and downspouts:

Fall means leaves falling from the trees and if you have trees close to your house, those leaves are likely to end up in your gutters and downspouts. It’s important to make sure all of those drainage areas are clear and unblocked by debris. Inspect and clean out your gutters now before the leaves start to fall and consider installing gutter guards to make the job of keeping them clean much easier.

2) Inspect your roof:

If you haven’t checked out your roof all summer, you should do it now before the start of fall. Inspect your roof for damaged or curled shingles, leaky vents, corroded flashing or other roof damage. This is especially important to inspect and take care of now before the winter weather and winter months come and make it harder to do roof repairs.

3) Drain and winterize outdoor faucets:

Fall is the perfect time to take necessary precautions for preventing exterior water pipes from bursting once winter weather arrives and the temperature gets below freezing. You should turn off the valves to the exterior hose bibs and then run the water until the pipes are empty. It is extra important to make sure all the water is drained from the pipes because if it is not, the water can freeze up and damage the pipes or cause flooding.

4) Freshen your filters:

The fall is the perfect time to clean or replace dirty furnace filters and give it an inspection. You will want to ensure your heating systems are ready to go for the cooler months and those random chilly nights could happen before you expect them. Have a professional inspect your heating system and recommend any updates or repairs.
